Local History

  • SP&S Railroad crews lay tracks through Stevenson in 1907

Following are stories and biographies of early Skamania County pioneers compiled from the archives of the Museum. A number of volunteers are in the process of proofreading manuscripts and in the coming months more will be added as they come available. Also, the Museum has many historical books and booklets available for study. The Museum also has a large archive of historic photos and copies are available, for a small fee. We are always looking for additional photos and stories to add to our archives. Please call 509-427-8210 or email info@columbiagorge.org if you wish to donate. The photos will be scanned and returned in short order.

About the Museum

Time prints of the millennia are boldly etched on the walls of the Columbia Gorge. They record a 40-million-year-long story of change, endurance and majesty. The first human imprints in the Gorge were left by the Indian cultures that flourished here for thousands of years, drawing both spiritual and physical strength from this.

When you visit the Columbia River Gorge Interpretive Center Museum, you are able to visualize and participate in the life of the Columbia River Gorge.
